Huffman Koos
Koos Brothers
Wohlfarth & Koos Co.

62-64 Springfield Avenue

From Stephanie Mannino:

My  grandfather Charles Koos Jr. always was proud  that he was from the Clinton Hill Section of Newark.  The Buehler Bakery was a part of their life as they delivered every day by horse drawn trucks to peoples homes fresh bread very early in the morning.  My great grandfather was a very clever and considerate man.  He opened a bank and people would visit him to ask for a Loan.  A most honorable man his handshake meant something.  His reputation was important to him and people respected him.  A German boy who came here after his father died in Germany (Klingenburg/ Heilbraun area).  His mother came to Jamesburg to live with her sister after her husband died. Carl Koos worked on the Buehler farm in Jamesburg and because he showed so much merit at 9-10 years old he was sent to Newark to work for his aunt who had a bakery.

He was a multi millionaire in the early 1900's because of his hard work and achievement. As you probably know the Koos family became the biggest furniture leaders in the country, first Koos Bros. and then Huffman Koos.

Koos Brothers was founded by Charles H. Koos, Jr. and Edward Koos (who had married a Wohlfarth daughter) , that's how the family started in the furniture business.  The family started as Direct Savings on Springfield Ave. Newark.

My Grandfather having the same clever mind as his German father decided to open a store on the Highway.  Shocking in 1929...How would they make it???  But they did it anyway in Rahway.  THE FIRST STORE to open on a highway RT. 29, St. George AVE.  Well they opened 1929 and you know what happened  ...................banks closed with all of the money, so they put the furniture on trucks and drove around and sold it. Charles went to the Manufacturers and made a deal of consignment which the furniture manufacturers were happy to do.  Not only did Charles have the insight to stay in business but he helped all of the Furniture Manufactures stay in business, Henredon etc.   Amazing man from Newark...Old Newark.....I could go on and on but I do know one thing, a Humble man from Newark built the most successful business in furniture retailing that had EVER  been.  And He was from Newark, Clinton Hill!!!!!!
