Third Ward Memories Part 2

In the mid and late 30's we still lived on Prince Street {odd #s west side} and had a small candy store on Prince Street {east side}

To continue a few recollections about "third ward " [in the 30s] these few came to mind, related to and "crossing" Prince St .

Corner of Montgomery Street, walk west toward Belmont Avenue. On the right side at Charlton Street, pass a magnificent brick building {built to last a hundred years or more ,does it still exist ?} This is/was the "public baths", where for three cents you would get soap and a towel and a shower.

A block further west {on Belmont Avenue } look to the right, see old Silpe Hall, used for meetings. Look to the left, see a larger than life statue of a KING holding a stein of beer. This is Krueger's Brewery and this is their "logo". The odor of beer brewing, together with the odor of HOOTON"s Chocolate [a distance away] was always there.

Walk east, down Montgomery Street to the corner of Charlton Street again and experience Elving's Metropolitan {Yiddish} Theater. Here is where I walked the aisles during intermission selling Hershey's, Nestles, Baby Ruths etc. and saw Paul Muni {not his name then} in one of the usual tear-jerkers, so popular in those days. On rare occasions a "musical" might appear .

Continue down toward Prince Street, I recall, a glazier store and on the corner of Prince Street, a small "hardware" store. More in the future as thoughts and memories appear.
