Thursday, July 2, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Sick and Wounded N.J. Soldiers. - The following sick and wounded New Jersey soldiers arrived at Philadelphia on the 23rd ult., and were taken to the Citizen’s Volunteer Hospital: Daniel Rose, E, 8. Saturday, July 4, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Colonel Ramsey: Colonel John Ramsey, of the Eighth New Jersey Regiment, who was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, on Thursday, arrived at his home in this city last evening. He was wounded by a spent musket ball in the left shoulder, but is not seriously injured. The colonel took into action 159 men and brought out 50 men and 2 officers. Captain Langston [Co. K], of the Regiment, is now in command. The Second Brigade, to which the Eighth Regiment is attached, is now reduced to about 400 men. Source: The American Standard. city. Source: The American Standard. Jersey City, Tuesday, July 7, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Arrival of Wounded soldiers at the U.S. Hospital. About seven hundred wounded soldiers arrived this morning, at the hospital, from the late battle-field at Gettysburg. They reached here at five o’clock, and were furnished with breakfast; they were then washed, provided with clean underclothes, and put to bed, to enjoy the first comfortable sleep for weeks. To see the poor fellows lying there, resting in clean beds, was worth beholding, and a sight calculated to warm the hardest heart. They have fought a good fight, and are now entitled to the rest which they will enjoy for some time to come. Monday, July 13, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- The Eight Regiment N.J.V. - This regiment has been consolidated into a single company, numbering 45 men, under the command of Capt. A.N. Vreeland, formerly of Company A. They are now doing guard duty at Antietam. Johnson, of this city [Newark, N.J.], formerly of the 8th N.J., wounded at Williamsburg, has been appointed Major in the Invalid Corps, and ordered to Louisville. Source: The Newark Daily Journal. Newark, N.J. Wednesday, July 29, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- A Fitting appointment. - Colonel A.J. Johnson of Newark, and formerly of the Eighth regiment, has received the commission of Major in the Invalid Corps. Col. J., it will be remembered, was wounded at the battle of Williamsburg, and disabled from further active service. By this appointment the Government secures the services of an accomplished officer, who would otherwise have been allowed to rust in idleness, and Colonel Johnson has the opportunity he so much desires, of serving his country in this her hour of need. The Colonel, or rather Major, has been ordered to Louisville, Ky. Source: Jersey City Daily Advocate. Jersey City, N.J. Thursday, July 30, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Died. At Baltimore, on the 29th inst. of wounds received in the battle of Gettysburg, Henry M. Shugard, aged 21 years. H, 8th Regiment is expected to arrive home in a day or two; should the body arrive in time, the funeral will take place on Saturday. The late members of the 8th Regiment are requested to meet at Military Hall this evening, for the purpose of making arrangements to attend the funeral in a body. At Baltimore, from wounds received at Gettysburg,, Captain Andrew S. Davis, of Company H, Eighth N.J. Volunteers, aged 30 years, and 4 months. The friends of the family, and members of Oriental Lodge F.and A.M., are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, at the Halsey street M.E. Church, to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2 ½ o’clock. The relatives are requested to meet at his brothers residence, (A.J. Davis,) 97 Congress st., at 2 o’clock precisely. Interment in Fairmount Cemetery. Source: Newark Daily Mercury, Newark, N.J., Friday, July 31, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- The Veterans - The detachments from the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th and 14th regiments New Jersey Volunteers, recently sent to this city [Trenton], consist of three officers and six non-commissioned officers and privates from each regiment: in all, thirty officers and sixty enlisted men. Of these nine officers, and eighteen enlisted men, have been sent to Elmira, N.Y. The remaining twenty-one officers and sixty three men, remain in Trenton. Thursday, August 13, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- New Jersey Regiments Paid. - The 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 15th New Jersey regiments, and Hexamer’s Battery were paid last week. Col. Cook was present, and has returned with a considerable sum of money for the families of the soldiers. Persons residing in Trenton, entitled to any share of this money, can obtain it by calling on Col. Cook this morning at the State House. Friday, August 21, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Promotions - The Adjutant General of this state, has recently issued the list of promotions, casualties, &c., in the New Jersey regiments, since the first of June last. Friday, August 28, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Letters from the 8th Regiment state they are still doing duty on the Rappahannock near Bealton, and do not expect to move at present. A few days since the regiment played a ball match with the 6th regiment and were successful. Source: Daily True American. Trenton, N.J. Thursday, Sept. 3, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- An Appeal. There is something very touching in the letters we occasionally receive from the old New Jersey regiments in which the writers so often refer to the small numbers to which their respective commands have been reduced by battle, sickness, &c. Some of these regiments have dwindled to mere skeletons and none of them are in effective fighting condition as regiments. Something should be done to fill up these gallant organizations whose heroic deeds on a score of battlefields have made the name of New Jersey illustrious. For some reason, the recruiting for these regiments is not nearly so successful as for new regiments. We are much surprised at this. Surely there is something to be prized in the privilege of wearing the badge of the glorious old First or Eighth, which have carried their standards into every bloody field of the war, and whose achievements are inseparably interwoven with all that is heroic of the war. If these regiments dwindle much further, we do not see how their regimental organization is to be kept intact; and we fear they may be consolidated, some of them thus losing the splendid names they have so dearly won. This would be a burning shame, to be avoided by every possible means. If recruiting is to be continued in this state, the effort should be first of all to fill up the ranks of the old New Jersey regiments. Source: The Plainfield Union. Plainfield, N.J. Tuesday, September 8, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- Major A.J. Johnson, of the Invalid Corps, and late Colonel of the 8th N.J.V., is now in command of Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Ind., where he is engaged in organizing the corps. As soon as companies are completed they are sent off to duty. He says that he is very pleasantly situated, and is well liked by those about him. It is thought that he will either be promoted to a Lieut. Colonelcy, or his commission will be so dated back that he will be the ranking Major of the Corps; a position for which he is well qualified. A Court Martial assembled on Friday and adjourned over to Monday, at Temperance Hall, in pursuance of orders from the War Department, to try such cases as might be brought before the court, in accordance with the order. The court is composed of the following officers: Captain David McVickers, 31 N.J., President. Captains James McKiernan, 7th N.J. John Langston, 8th N.J. James Walker, 15th N.J. Samuel B. Jobes, 12th N.J. Robert S. Johnston, 4th N.J. !st Lieut. Albert L. Blue, 1st N.J. Captain John H. Vanderveer, 15th N.J., Judge Advocate. The principle business of this court will be to try deserters. They tried two recruits on Monday, and another yesterday. The court will proceed with the work of putting deserters through every day, meeting at 9 A.M. and adjourning at 3 P.M. Leonard, of the 8th N.J., and now at his residence in this city [Newark], has been promoted to a captaincy in the same regiment. He joins his command in the field at once. Blauvelt, and Sergeants Wellington Bird and Isrell Van Riper of the 8th N.J.V., who have been on recruiting service in this city [Jersey City] for the past five weeks, have been ordered on the same service at New Brunswick, and leave for that place to-morrow. Saturday, September 19, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- The following New Jersey regiments were paid last week: 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th and 15th. Col. J. Cook was, as usual, present at the payment, and returned on Saturday morning, with a considerable amount of money for the families of these regiments. Persons entitled to any portion of this money, and residing in the city [Trenton], can receive their money by calling on Col. Cook, at the State House, to-day. Monday, September 21, 1863. -------------------------------------------------- The Advance of the Jersey Troops. A letter from an officer in the 8th New Jersey Regiment, dated on Saturday, states that on Tuesday last, the 2nd N.J. Brigade, with the army generally, left Bealton Station, and advanced eight miles to the Rapidan, and was in camp between Culpepper and the river, where Lee was in force. There had been skirmishing all along the line, and on Saturday heavy firing at the front. The Brigade was prepared to move at any moment. The country was very fine, and th boys were luxuriating in green corn, string beans, watermelons, &c., gathered from rebel farms. On the march they crossed two rivers, the Rappahannock and Hazel, with the water knee-deep at the fords and a swift current. The boys took off their shoes and stockings, rolled their pants and waded through. Capt. O.S. Johnson is acting Major of the 8th. Source: State Gazette. Trenton, N.J. June 20, 1865 9:00 a.m. pursuant to adjournment the Court met and proceeded to the trial of the following: Philip Cook - private, Co. C, 8th Regt. N.J.Vols. on the following charge and specification- Charge - absence without leave. Specification- in this that Private Philip Cook, Co. C, 8th Regt. N.J.V. did absent himself from his company and Regiment without proper authority on or about the 5th day of February 1865, and did not return until the following morning. Question - (by the Court) Was he disabled at the time? Answer Yes Sir and excused by the Doctor. Question - (by the Court) Was there any engagement that evening? Answer - Yes Sir. Prisoners Statement I was excused by the Doctor and ordered to the rear by the Adjutant. Came up in the evening to bring spades to build breastworks with and returned again to the rear. According to orders returned next morning to my company but was not marked for duty.
