The Edward Scudder Homes opened between 1959 & 1961 and was named for Edward W. Scudder, (1881-1952), publisher of the Newark News from 1931 - 1950. It was located between Rose, Court, Howard & Lincoln Streets. Buildings 1 through 4 were demolished in 1987 From Andrew Keegan: I worked in an urban gardening program in Newark from 1978-83, and I coordinated several gardens in Newark housing projects. One of our largest and most successful was at the Scudder Homes project, off Springfield Ave. We built a geodesic dome there and grew plants throughout the winter. It was just west of St. Benedict's, on land that had been cleared after the riots. We had a huge area to work with.
