William Joseph Anderson

        Born in Virginia, Co. Cavan, Ireland on December 13, 1863.  Immigrated to US circa 1877;  June 9, 1899 joined Newark Police Department as Chanceman 3rd Grade, and was assigned to the 2nd Precinct;  promoted to Chanceman 2nd Grade Nov. 1, 1899; Promoted to Chanceman 1st Grade Jan 1, 1900;  Promoted to Patrolman, Jan 1, 1900; Detailed on Mt. Prospect Avenue and in that vicinity in uniform at night.  July 10, 1918, detailed to Headquarters.  Father of Newark Detective Sergeant Robert W. Anderson, who was killed in the line of duty March 5, 1930.  Died October 19, 1930, some say of a broken heart.  Source for Police Records Folder No. 752, Newark Police Museum, Fraternal Order of Police.
